I love how green everything is!

Today, the weather was so beautiful that a few of us just enjoyed the outdoors.  These are pictures of the gardens where I live.  The guys tossed the football (American) around and put the grill to use.  I took advantage of trying out my new camera!  Enjoy!

Spring Break!

We are on a two week Spring Break here in St Andrews.  Actually we've already been on it for one week and I have spent my time working, writing essays and then I spent a day at a Rotarian's farm feeding and playing with baby lambs and calves (Pictures to follow soon).  Last night, a Rotarian couple, took me and my friend Mandy (A Rotary scholar from Texas) to Anstruther, a fishing village about 20 minutes away that is famous for its Fish and Chips.

I am not a fan of fish, but I decided if anything could change my mind it would be a fish shop that all the celebrities (including Hugh Grant and the Prince of Wales!) go to when they are in St Andrews golfing (Actually, I don't know if the Prince golfs, but Hugh does, remember the pictures when I met him?  It was a memorable ocassion for the both of us!!). ...  And it did.  It was delicious and I was amazed!  We went during the evening so I was unable to get any pictures, but there is a nice coastal path that leads to Anstruther that I plan on hiking this summer, so I will post some pictures at a later date.

Update:

I can now add Thai food to my ever growing list of ethnic foods consumed.

A groups of friends and I ate at Nahm-Jim:  http://www.nahm-jim.co.uk/
Nahm-Jim shot to fame in 2010 (and arguably before as many celebrities eat there: Hugh Grant, Sean Connery, Samuel L. Jackson--perhaps they go together after they finish a round of golf?) when it won Gordon Ramsey's Best Thai restaurant in the UK.

Enhancing my Palate.

Anyone that knows me knows that I am a very American eater.  What does this mean you ask, well my favorite are hamburgers, BBQ (preferable J & L's--fingers crossed they re-open!), steak and potatoes and Mexican food (by which I mean fajitas, hold the peppers and onions please!).   Those are the foods that I call delish!
So coming to Scotland I have learned that the British did indeed earn their reputation for bad (bland) food.  For months I have eaten every kind and colour of soup imaginable (my favourite is the green soup),  quiche, and other types of somewhat bland food, with the occasional (i.e. sometimes twice a week) subway trip thrown in (Subway is the only fast food chain in St. Andrews).  So when my friend Ahmad offered to make a traditional Middle Eastern meal for a group of friends, we jumped on it.  He cooked for 5 hours straight and the result was a heavenly dance on my tongue!  So good! 4 different types of chicken some in sauce, some not), beef, shrimp, some bread covered in cheese and spices, 2 dishes that looked like rice, but had a fancy name, salads, humus, etc.  I didn't know the names of anything, all I knew was that I was glad he made us an "all you can eat" buffet.
Tonight for dinner, Deans Court was serving fish.  I know what you are thinking, I live on the coast so the fish must be to die for.  Well let's just say I wouldn't take a running leap off these coastal cliffs for it!  I'm not a huge fan of seafood as it is, but my friends here that do like seafood, say the Deans Court fish is blah.  Therefore, tonight we decided to go to an Indian restaurant and it was so good too.  I had a chicken Korma, nan, etc...  Now I am planning on finishing the evening with a tub (It's kind of little!) of Cookie Dough Ben & Jerry's Ice cream.  And that is what I call delish.

Weekend of lovliness

The weather this weekend has been absolutely gorgeous.  Friday evening, some friends and I attended a Black and White Ball-so much fun.

Then on Saturday Mandy, Bethany, and I took a long stroll down the West Sands and just enjoyed the views.  Here are some pictures of the waves crashing in onto the East Sands:

Today, Mandy and I went with our friend Richard to see an art exhibition of Jack Vettriano's work.  He is my favorite artist and from Fife.

Love my home away from home.

I can’t believe it, the days are passing so quickly (Tends to happen when the sun sets about 3pm!  Actually now the sun doesn’t set until around 5.)  Though might I note that we are now on Day 15 of rain (yes, I said Day 15!)

I made it through my first set of finals and then during my intersession break I went skiing in the French Alps, staying in Chamonix, France.  It was so beautiful; unfortunately, my camera decided it didn’t want to work so the only pictures I will be able to post are the ones that I’ve taken from other people!  Still you will be able to see the beautiful scenery. (Is anyone having trouble viewing the pictures on my facebook?  If so, please let me know and I will figure something else out!)

Once back in St. Andrews, it was so nice to reconnect with friends coming back from holiday.  Semester 2 has started and it looks like it will be even better than Semester 1.  Semester 1 was really a foundation class (very necessary) so essentially we studied the history of the Middle East and Central Asia.  This semester I am actually doing security studies and focusing on political Islam.

Last week I was able to help with a Rotary fundraiser to benefit local cancer charities.  The Rotarians put on a very eclectic concert complete with classical music, belly dancing, street dancing, Acapella singing, and lovely mature ladies aggressively playing the drums (they were my favorite!)   See link: http://www.byrerhythmtaiko.co.uk/

Last night was suppose to be a good time to see the Northern Lights (even as far South as I am) unfortunately it was too cloudy, so we didn’t see anything.  We did however have a bon fire; perhaps more accurately called an ember fire on the beach that was so nice.  This makes me really excited for it to warm up a bit more.

Love the beach.  Love it here!

Cheers and xx
